I was intrigued by your question and felt that I would take it upon myself, feeling it my civic duty to the vast Final Fantasy community, to enlighten you on how to make the game enjoyable. The answer to "How to not lose interest in the game" is a very simple one. The answer is that you can't. Final Fantasy IX is a disgraceful attempt at a memorable tite and doesn't deserve to grace your video game library. The storyline is hardly enthralling and the character development is laughable at best. My advice to you is to trade in the game as soon as possible at your nearest used video game retailer. By all means, leave the game for someone who can appreciate its revolutionary gameplay and who won't ignore the deeper eternal meaning wound tightly around the facade of a light-hearted comical journey involving a boy with a tail and a frog-women who fights with a giant spoon.
The point that I'm trying to make (although roundabout) is that the Final Fantasy series is not for everyone. It is not the "grunt, grunt, lets go play Madden 2004 so I can practice my defense's T-Formation" nor the "I love Gran Tourismo because I enjoy the realistic physics of the vehicles and the enjoyment of mastering both standard and drift style racing." On the contrary, the Final Fantasy series is an engrossing (yes), "fantasy" style (yes, again) game that is meant to analyze and ponder the human mind and the eternal questions that haunt our lives much like a great novel would. Final Fantasy IX is a classic example of the unending question of personal identity. Take Vivi, he sees mages like himself being manufactured on assembly lines who are devoid of any emotion or soul and he must come to terms with what this means. Is he a mindless puppet as well? If not, what makes him different? What is his purpose in life? Surely it must be more than mindlessly steering airships and being a slave to the rest of the world, right? These questions and more are what come together and make a truly memorable game. I'm not trying to disrespect games like Gran Tourismo or Madden because these games are groundbreaking in their own way. Both of these games are in the forefront of "realism" and that is what makes them so popular. Playing such a game lets you experience what racing in reality is like or the technical aspects behind a seemingly simple game of football. But the disparity between Final Fantasy games and reality is what make them great. They are able to take realistic situations and place them in a fantasy setting where they can be molded and pondered so that perhaps answers may start to appear. Gamers who play games such as Final Fantasy IX are able to come away from a game with their own ideas and opinions that are not resticted by the tight guidlines of reality.
Now I realize that I have been rambling for some time now but it is here where I want to get to the core of the situation and the answer. Final Fantasy IX and all the Final Fantasy games for that matter are exactly what you make of them. Final Fantasy is your life, its my life, its everyone's life. Just like how you choose what you want to make out of your life the same is true with games like Final Fantasy IX. You choose for yourself what you want to get out of it. If you want nothing out of it then you find yourself skipping through the many conversations waiting for a battle and hoping for the end of the game so you can say that you beat Final Fantasy IX for the simple reason of being able to put it on your growing list of games you've conquered. In reality though, you've lost. You missed the game and you missed life. But if you want someting out of the game, if you truly want to immerse yourself in the game then you'll find that the things you get out of it are amazing and mind boggling. You'll learn more about yourself and the world and you'll come away being enlightened to the plight of human existence and the depth and strength of the human spirit.
Of course, this isn't meant to threaten you and it isn't meant to convince you how fantastic the Final Fantasy series really is. The simple reason for me writing this post is to inform you that if you find yourself getting bored with the game then turn it off. It wasn't meant for you and you weren't meant for it. Please, take it back. Don't torture yourself with a game you don't want to play. Go back to Madden and practice your touchdown pass. I'll be playing Final Fantasy IX.
