Same here. I didn't kill the Paratroopa, though, but here's the scoop: You have to kill the Hammer Bros. 3 TIMES (Once on the double-brick platform, mushroom is in the Top-Right section, Block 2 from the right. Once on another platform, mushroom/fireflower is Top Left, Second Box, and the last is on the ground.) Yoshi egg in Challenge mode is near one of the walls.

you got to kill the clawed guy, then you run as fast as you can, until you see 2 red turtles, the one on the box you got to hit him towards the ninja guys to kill them, then you got to jump over a brick and a tunnel, and then there's 2 more ninja guys don't get killed bye them, and then your going to see 2 hidden boxes your going to run and jump on them to get TO THE see-saw and then your just going to run cuz you almost there

you have to kill the turtle/bird at the beginning and then when you get to those long lines of boxes, the one at the top and the second one from the right is a mushroom then.. you can't die until you get to the next row of boxes and then you get the flower. thats how you can kill the guys with the shooting axes.. hope it helped (:
