Is there a Character select option in the multiplayer modes?

I've been playing the multiplayer part (PS2 version) for a week now and it won't let either me or my friend be anyone but Roger (Player 1) or XIII (Player 2/me) I'm sick o fplaying the smae guy every time!!!
