there is a code you push while playing super mario brothers if you get really far and you don't want to start all over and you die.

According to this website (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/code/8180.html) this is the answer to your question.
When you get Game Over, wait until the 1 player/2 player screen comes up, Hold A then press start. You will begin the first level of whatever world you died in. For example if you got game over in 8-4 you will restart in 8-1.

I HATE 2 BURST YOUR BUBBLE, BUT SUPER MARIO BROS IS NOT BATTEREY BACKED, THEREFORE YOU CANNOT SAVE YOUR GAME.
This actually work. Once you get to a hard level you can save! Do save you play until you die, then when the start up screen starts up again when you have to option to chose between 1 players or 2 players, simply press and hold the A button while pressing start abd you will start back at the level where you died. The only bad part is that you score will be zero again and you will only start on the home level Ex. 4-1, 5-1, 6,1 etc.. you will never start at 4-2 etc..
