How do you get past those shell guys that say "You can't do anything to get past me.... I think" or something like that?

well, it will be a LONG time before you get past him, behind him are either prizes or things meant for the end of the game, in order to get past them, mario and luigi need to master the firehand and lightning hand tekniques (wow i can't spell), and learn to use them as a brother's command. once you have, place mario in the back, use firehand (be sure you've got some distance between you and the turtle) and you'll nock into him, he'll fall, and you can get past him
