Looked at picuture, secrect at the Diploma, read the note and used the key in the ink well and put it back. BUT when I go back to the map the cursor hand shows I am to pick something up---What? I can't navigate to another place on the map.

You have to use the same key to get out that you used to get in.

Make sure that you have explored the morgue and have seen everything down the secret passage before the game will allow you to continue. The wall has a small panel that will accept the key from the inkwell. The game will not allow you to continue until you have explored everything down there. Did you open the drawer in there and listen to the conversation?
