Penance is ONLY in the international version...and you can only get it after you defeat all the Dark Aeons...the Dark Aeons are only in Final Fantasy International also...

Penance? There's no such aeon. You might be thinking of Yojimbo or Anima. Yojimbo, you go to his fayth in the Calm Lands gorge and say you wanna be the strongest, then pay him a min of 205, 000 Gil and he's yours. Anima, get the hidden items in every temple (including Zanarkand) and you can go to baaj temple from the airship and touch all the spheres to get the aeon.
