You are not completely resistant to these things, it only affects you LESS. You will still lose life if you are attacked with a spell, even if you have the element that helps you resist it, particularly if your magic points are low.
The list of resistance elements is below:
Water - Character resists cold Fire - Character resists fire Wind - Character resists thunder Earth - Character resists poison and petrification
You're much better off going with the badges or armor that resists these things.
