Once you have finished a level, and gone on, get on the waypoint and go back to the lower levels and fight the bosses. This will give you a lot of special items and build your experience up.

The best way to get Set Items without trading is to reach a level where you can somewhat easily farm bosses such as Mephisto. Set items will drop most often in areas such as his lair, and with a character like a Sorceress you can easily grind him.
